Fontys R13

Three new buildings – R11, R12 and R13 with over 24,000 square metres of educational programme – for one campus. We designed three interiors, in which the individual qualities of the building and its defining elements are strongly emphasized. R13 is a prominent, welcoming building with an equally welcoming interior.

R13: welcoming in every scale
R13 is prominently built as a gateway for visitors to the campus and as a link between the campus and the city. It also houses the home base of five institutes and many shared educational facilities. Although the interior is therefore strongly focused on the identity – each institute has an individual, recognizable colour on its own floor – of all institutes, a light, warm and largely bamboo-materialized atrium connects all these floors as a neutral and pleasant core. Moreover, it is not only a building with two different characters in colour and atmosphere, but also spatial.

The bamboo-materialised wall along the atrium is clearly a grand gesture, but various smaller spaces have been created adjacent to it to provide a sense of security to users and visitors as a social meeting place. The use of bamboo also reflects this: where this material is used extensively on the wall of the atrium and, among other things, perforated, contributes to good acoustics, it scales down to smaller divisions in the surrounding meeting places, such as niches and integrated cabinets.

In addition to an individual character of all three buildings, they are also related to each other in architecture and interior. Read more about our approach and sustainability on the pages of the campus, R11 and R12.

“Along the generous atrium, the wall made of bamboo clearly functions as a grand gesture, with various smaller spaces adjacent to it. Created as a social meeting place, pleasant and sheltered for users and visitors.”
“The use of the bamboo varies: while it is perforated on the wall along the atrium and contributes to good acoustics, it scales down to smaller divisions such as niches and integrated cabinets in the surrounding meeting places.”
