Fontys R12

Three new buildings – R11, R12 and R13 with over 24,000 m2 of educational programme – for one campus. We designed three interiors, in which the individual qualities of the building and its defining elements are strongly emphasized. The balance between accessibility and privacy is central in R12.

R12: open vs closed
Where the practical education in the field of physiotherapy, MRI and surgery – with medical treatments for the city’s residents – requires a low threshold value, the same programme simultaneously ensures that the interior must guarantee privacy. That is why an inviting atrium has been designed centrally, as an open route through a more closed, surrounded building.

A spacious staircase connects the different floors here, which makes it function as a center in the interior. Various strongly materialized and colored spaces have been placed around it, in order to continue to surprise the visitor in the discovery of the building. Deeper in the interior, private spaces have been positioned with precision and sufficient distance from the public atrium to guarantee the necessary privacy, safety and comfort for students and patients.

In addition to the individual character of all three buildings, they are also related in architecture and interior. Read more about our approach and sustainability on the campus, R11 and R13 pages.
