Fontys Campus
Three new buildings for one campus. We designed three interiors, in which the individual qualities of the building and defining elements in the interior are strongly emphasized: but with one appearance. A strong connection between interior, architecture and landscape ensures that students move, meet and learn in a family-like urban campus interior.

Move, meet and learn in a family-like campus
Education continues to evolve, so flexibility of the building is an important aspect from Fontys. Every building must be able to accommodate any training course. For Fontys, education is increasingly focused on society and the working environment. We have also designed this: each building has a clear main structure with all-round flexibility and attention to a hospitable entrance. Future-proof and open to both students and residents of the city.

Familiar but unique
It is not often that a campus is expanded with three separate buildings for the same purpose. A unique project, a unique approach. As an integral design team, we have been selected (architect, interior, landscape) for the request of 24000 m². After joint concept development, we provided the answer to this question of three separate buildings.
An excellent opportunity for us to design a ‘gesamtkunstwerk’ together with Barcode Architects, NUDUS and OKRA Landscape Architects. An environment where interior, architecture and landscape reinforce each other as optimally as possible. From choice of materials to the relationship between stairs and square. Design phases ran parallel, resulting in a clear coherence between interior and exterior.
In addition to the recognisability of the family bond between the three buildings, individuality also plays a major role. After all, they are each uniquely designed. This is expressed in a strong, spatial element – wall, atrium and core – for every building.

Sustainable in different ways
The interiors are sustainable in several respects. Sustainable in the use of materials such as bamboo. Walls in the buildings are coated with Ekotex. Existing furniture has been reused as much as possible. But also – in our belief – sustainable in aesthetics, by making the base timeless, natural and in a neutral palette. And sustainable by purposefully encouraging movement and encounters with the design.
Acoustic solutions are integrated into the interior: perforated walls form a visible and graphic element for all three buildings, fitting into the design. Perforations and sound-absorbing material are incorporated in and behind monolithic green, white and bamboo material walls. Existing furniture has been reused, additional new furniture was selected to match the existing – in addition to requirements for stain, scratch and wear resistance.
